Booda Bike Maintenance
Tubeless wheels:
The tubeless wheels on our bicycles are filled with Effetto Mariposa Vegetalex sealant. Vegetalex is extremely durable. Unlike conventional sealants based on liquid polymers, it uses a blend of natural particles, including finely ground olive pits and cellulose fibers bound together with xanthan gum. This unique combination provides puncture protection for over 6 months in most tires.
Important tip: the lifespan of Vegetalex can be extended by adding its dedicated “refill” – which is simply plain water! If, after a few months, you add an amount of water equal to 50% of the original Vegetalex volume in your tires, it ensures the sealant keeps the right viscosity and can move quickly inside the tire. Unlike many similar products, Vegetalex does not become sticky inside the tire.
Frame protection:
We use very high-quality double-butted cro-mo tubes for our bicycles. During assembly, we apply a frame protection treatment designed to protect against moisture and water. For perfect protection, we recommend reapplying generously once a year through the frame openings using Dinitrol frame protection spray. If you live in a very salty environment (salted snowy roads, seaside), we recommend doing this twice a year.
Due to moisture, a small amount of rusty liquid may collect near the bottom bracket inside the frame; the Dinitrol liquid gathers this. This is normal – it’s only a small amount of surface rust, and it will not affect the structural integrity of the steel.
Gear hubs:
General rule for all internal gear hubs:
Internal gear hubs must not be shifted under load. Before shifting, you must release the pressure from the pedals, perform the shift, and then you can resume pedaling under load.
Our bicycles use cable-operated gear hubs. The cable may stretch, so check the cable tension after the first 50 km, then at 100 km, and then at 500 km, and adjust if necessary.
If you experience mis-shifting, gear skipping, or strange operation, do not continue using the bike until the issue is resolved. Check the cable tension and ensure the alignment markers are in the correct position.
Alfine 8:
Shimano Alfine 8 hubs are oil-dipped. The manufacturer recommends performing the oil immersion service every 5,000 km or once a year.
Alfine 11:
Shimano Alfine 11 hubs are oil-filled. The manufacturer recommends performing an oil change every 5,000 km or once a year.
Rohloff:
Rohloff hubs are oil-filled. The manufacturer recommends performing an oil change every 5,000 km or once a year.
Brakes:
For hydraulic brakes, braking power may decrease due to brake pad wear, rotor wear, or air in the system.
Brake pad replacement:
Brake pads must be replaced depending on usage. Monitor their wear and replace them in time.
Recommendation:
Urban / mixed use: approx. 1,500–3,000 km
Mountain, with lots of descents: as low as 500–1,500 km
Gentle touring use: up to 3,000–5,000 km
Brake rotor replacement:
Rotors wear out less frequently than pads, but their condition should still be monitored and replaced when needed.
Recommendation:
Normal urban / touring use: up to 10,000–20,000 km
Extremely harsh conditions: can wear out in under 2,000 km
If braking power decreases and the brake lever pulls too far in, there may be air in the hydraulic system. In this case, the system needs bleeding. Refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for this.
For mechanical brakes, decreased braking performance can be caused not only by pad and rotor wear but also by cable stretch. Check cable tension, the position of the cable anchor bolt, and the position of the pad adjustment screws.
